FIRECRACKER TURKEY LOLLIPOPS
High Protein | Low Carb | Gluten Free
Today I am coming at you with ANOTHER lean turkey recipe in partnership with the Turkey Farmers of Canada! This recipe is 3 out of 4 leanlicous turkey recipes, each focusing on a different part of the body! First was full body with the MOIST Turkey Meatloaf Muffins, second was the leancredible FLOURLESS Fried Turkey Wings. For Recipe 3, we will be focusing on the LEGS with these LEANLICOUS FIRECRACKER TURKEY LOLLIPOPS!
Why Turkey?
Turkey is a super LEAN, meaty and leanlicous source of protein. Protein is VITAL to sustain and continue growing lean muscle! Aside from protein, turkey is also packed with nutrients! The dark meat contains more fat, but with that fat comes more nutrients! White turkey meat is less fatty, but also contains a little less nutrients!
CHANGE IT UP! I LOVE to try new things and keep my body guessing by constantly trying new healthy and leanlicous foods! Turkey is just as versatile as chicken or bee! , but will provide you with new flavours and ideas to work with in the kitchen!
Firecracker Turkey Lollipops
HAPPY HUMPDAY SQUADIES!
Today’s recipe is going to get the metabolism FIRED UP and leave your taste buds wanting more! These turkey legs are the perfect summer dinner and taste leancredible when cooked on the barbeque! Turkey legs are similar to chicken legs, but are a lot BIGGER and meatier! One turkey leg is about double (or more) the size of your average chicken leg!
Do you like spice?
Then you will LOVE these turkey legs! The rub is super simple and is made up of 3 ingredients, cayenne pepper, paprika, and chilli flakes! I usually add a little more chilli flakes to get an extra bit of spice! Spicy foods are great for speeding up the metabolism which can help with weight loss! Each spice has its own unique health benefits! Cayenne is packed with vitamins and nutrients. Eating Cayenne pepper can help your digestive system, and surprisingly, can also help you stay full for longer, and avoid overeating! Paprika is packed with antioxidants! Paprika is also good for your heart health! Due to its high amount of antioxidants, paprika is PERFECT to pair with these turkey legs! Antioxidants needs FAT in order to absorb into the body, since turkey legs have some fat on them they are a great combo! Last but not least, chilli peppers, like cayenne are great to help boost your immune system which can help with fighting off sickness and weight loss!
And for the sauce?!
More spice of course! The sauce is another super simple recipe, which includes only 2 ingredients, low sugar BBQ sauce and Sriracha sauce! If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I LOVE my Sriracha sauce! Sriracha is perfect to spice up any dish with a super low amount of calories! Mixing sriracha sauce with a sweeter sauce, in this case, low sugar BBQ sauce, you will get the perfect combination of sweet and spicy, without too much of an over powered spicy taste!
My SECRET for making these lollipops perfect is adding the sauce on at the end, when the legs are almost done cooking! This will prevent the sauce from burning or getting too crispy, losing all the flavour! This also creates a perfect glaze around the lollipop, so each bite has just the right amount of flavour! You can also choose to make some extra sauce and use it as a dipping sauce if you want to crank up the heat a little bit more!
As always, cook along with me! Try out this recipe, post it on Instagram and tag @LEANSQUAD and @canadianturkey so we can see your LEANLICIOUS creations!
Here’s how to make it:
LEAN-GREDIENTS :
-
4-5 Turkey Wings (bone in)
-
2 teaspoons Cayenne
-
2 teaspoons Paprika
-
1 teaspoon Chili Flakes (can add more for extra spice)
-
1/2 Cup Low Sugar BBQ Sauce
-
1/2 Cup Sriracha
LEAN-STRUCTIONS:
-
First things first is we want to spice our wings. Combine the cayenne pepper and paprika together and sprinkle over wings. Then sprinkle over chilli flakes. Rub in spices evenly over the wings.
-
To grill the wings to perfection, heat BBQ to 375℉ roughly. Spray grill with cooking oil and then add wings. Make sure you rotate wings every few minutes for 20-30 minutes (or until cooked through *aim for at least 165 degrees on your thermometer).
-
While Turkey wings are grilling, combine sriracha and low sugar bbq sauce in a bowl together and mix well.
-
5 minutes prior to wings being ready, dip in sauce and place back on grill. By adding the sauce later we avoid burning the wings and keep them extra saucy!. This is the lean secret!
-
Serve and use remaining sauce as dipping sauce!!!
